Area West Environmental, Inc. – On-Call Biologist
Area West Environmental, Inc. (AWE) is an environmental consulting firm in the Sacramento area seeking an On-Call Biologist. This position will report to a project located in Larkspur, CA. Applicants must have experience with anadromous fish and clapper/Ridgeway’s rail. The applicant should have relevant experience conducting comprehensive biological surveys, preparing environmental compliance, and permitting documentation, and coordinating with clients and constructions crews. The typical work week for this project is Monday-Saturday, 10 hours each day.
Education Requirements:
-Must have a Bachelor’s (Master’s or Ph.D. preferred) degree in Biology, Environmental Science, or a closely related field.
Experience Requirements:
- 5 years of professional environmental experience in California.
- Experience with California plants and wildlife, threatened and endangered species surveys, and consulting with state and federal regulatory agencies.
- Understanding of state and federal laws and regulations, including but not limited to: California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA), National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), Clean Water Act, Federal Endangered Species Act, California Endangered Species Act, and California Fish and Game Code.

- Strong time management skills – needs to possess the ability to prioritize and meet deadlines; simultaneously work on and manage multiple tasks/projects.

- Excellent oral and written communication skills, detail oriented, and resourceful.
- Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.
- Solid technical writing ability.
- Ability to work hours other than 9-5, if needed (e.g., early mornings, late nights, weekends).
- Self-motivated with a work ethic that incorporates honesty, punctuality, and initiative.
- Well-developed interpersonal skills – must work well with all tiers of managers, technical and administrative staff.
- Must be able to conduct fieldwork for long hours in sometimes inclement weather conditions, including walking up to 10 miles per day, often in rugged terrain, and be able to carry various types of field equipment and supplies.
- Willingness to travel and stay overnight or extended stays.
- Must have the ability to use field tools.
- Must have a valid California Driver’s license, good driving record, proof of insurance, and be authorized to work in the U.S. without company sponsorship.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Conducting presence/absence and habitat suitability surveys for special-status plants and wildlife, preconstruction surveys, biological and construction monitoring, and regulatory compliance/permitting.
- Writing wetland delineations, Natural Environment Studies, Biological Assessments, botanical survey reports, biological permit applications.
- Managing project tasks, budgets, and deadlines.
- Communicating with project staff, clients, and regulatory agency staff.
- Collaboratively work with clients and staff.
- Compiling and coordinating completion of project proposals, reports, and permit applications.
- Conducting background research and database searches for biological studies.
- Identifying avoidance measures, conducting impact assessments, and mitigation planning.
- Complying with all company policies and guidelines.
